Corfu Island - Liston

A walk in the Old Town of Corfu must begin and end at the Liston. Many cafeterias and restaurants, housed in the large arched arcades with the lovely arches, or voltes (walks) as the corfiots call them, at the west side of the square of the Spianada, consist the most attractive pole of attraction for residents and visitors.

The construction of the block begun during the B’ French Domination of the island between 1807-1814 under the plans of the French engineer Mattie de Leseps, the father of the person who constructed the Suez Canal and is in the pattern of the famous rue de Rivioli of Paris while the Greek engineer Ioannis Parmezan assisted in its construction.

During the English Commission (1815-1864) the English extended the arched arcades while gradually they added floors, that today are houses and offices.

The Liston consists the cosmopolitan center of the town. Here you will arrange your rendezvous and here is the most probable place for sudden and unexpected meetings. The sun drenched Sunday mornings you will enjoy your coffee at one of the many cafeterias while on Saturday afternoon you may watch cricket at the Spianada. Many bands of the town and the litany's of Saint Spyridon will parade in front of you.
